Eskimos start camp with four Canadian Football League Quarterbacks
Danny Maciocia wanted a quartet of quarterbacks under contract before the Edmonton Eskimos headed to training camp. And that's how many pivots the rookie head coach will have when the Green and Gold kickoff camp at Concordia University College on May 29.
After drawing little interest from the eight other CFL teams, Bart Hendricks has re-upped with the Esks.
"I've re-signed and I'll be up there in May," is all an uncharacteristically tight-lipped Hendricks had to say when contacted by the Sun yesterday.
With Khari Jones slated to play behind starter Jason Maas and sophomore Jason Johnson tabbed as the No. 3 man, Hendricks could be in tough to land a job.
"It's going to be very interesting," offered the Boise State product, who joined the Esks in July of 2002 and played out his option last season. The 26-year-old toted the clipboard and appeared in one game during his rookie season with the Esks.
Last season the six-foot, 212-pound pivot appeared in five games and completed 12 of 24 passes for 164 yards and one interception. While the deck appears to be stacked against Hendricks, Maciocia expects the former San Diego Charger and Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award winner to compete for a job regardless of where he sits on the depth chart.
"If you're going to come here thinking you're No. 4, then don't come," Maciocia said.
"When you come to camp, you come to camp to compete. He should come in here thinking he can be No. 2 or No. 3. If he doesn't come here with that intent, he's at the wrong place."
