Shaun King to join the Canadian Football League Hamilton Tiger-Cats
Former National Football League quarterback Shaun King is expected to be unveiled as a member of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at a media conference today, squeezing into an already crowded depth chart that should erupt into a full-blown positional battle when training camp opens this weekend.
Hamilton now has five quarterbacks under contract, including incumbent starter Jason Maas. King, who turned 30 yesterday, has seven seasons of NFL experience on his resume but has not thrown a meaningful pass in three years.
The Tiger-Cats are also expected to announce the signing of defensive lineman J.P. Bekasiak, who the team selected fourth overall in the Canadian draft earlier this month. Both players are believed to have arrived in Hamilton.
Hamilton finished last in the CFL's East Division last season with a 4-14 record that fell largely on the shoulders of an awful offence. The Ticats fired head coach Greg Marshall and have since replaced him with former Montreal Alouettes head coach Charlie Taaffe.
The other quarterbacks in camp include Ian Butler, who was acquired in a trade with Saskatchewan over the winter, second-year Ticat Richie Williams and former Hawaii University standout Timmy Chang.
King has been on the team's radar for some time, even though he has not held a position of prominence in the NFL for the better part of a decade. King started 16 games with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the 2000 campaign, throwing for 2,769 yards and 18 touchdowns. He also threw 13 interceptions and never again appeared in more than three games per season.
The Las Vegas Gladiators, an Arena Football League team, released King last month.
Hamilton's quarterback battle will be the second such fight in Southern Ontario this spring, mirroring the competition in Toronto, where the Argonauts are also expected to audition five quarterbacks.
