Former Canadian Football League player passes away

Carlton Rose, one of the best football players at Stranahan High School, has died.Rose died Sunday of a stroke, according to his sister, Carmenita Griffin. He was 44.
A two-time South Florida Sun-Sentinel All-County selection, Rose graduated from Stranahan in 1980 and signed with the University of Michigan. In four seasons with the Wolverines, Rose was part of the 1981 Rose Bowl champions as a freshman and was named the school's best defensive lineman his senior year in 1983.Rose played professionally in the United States Football League with the Michigan Panthers and Los Angeles Express. He also played with the Ottawa Rough Riders of the Canadian Football League and two games for the Washington Redskins as a strike replacement player in 1987. "He was a great gentleman," former Stranahan football coach Rick Perry said. "He was a credit to everything and everybody."In 1999 Rose was named to the Sun-Sentinel's Broward County high school football All-Time Team as a defensive lineman. Rose helped lead Stranahan to consecutive 7-3 records his junior and senior years.Funeral services will be held today at 10 a.m. at Mt. Bethel Baptist Church, 901 NW 11th Ave., Fort Lauderdale.Rose is survived by his wife, Agnes Rose; mother, Carolyn Rose-Griffin; grandmother, Blanche "Madear'' Rose; three sisters and one brother.
